Imagine an island so quiet you can hear your own thoughts drift away with the tide. Picture waters so clear that even from the pier, you spot colorful fish darting beneath the surface. Welcome to Tanjung Putus, a tiny island off the southern coast of Sumatra in Indonesia’s Lampung Province—untouched, unspoiled, and unforgettable.

Once a Cape, Now an Island

    Tanjung Putus

Tanjung Putus wasn’t always an island. Long ago, it was a cape attached to the mainland of Sumatra. According to local lore and geological hints, a powerful natural event—possibly the legendary Krakatoa eruption—caused the land to fracture and sink, leaving behind a channel that now separates the island from the mainland.

Today, Tanjung Putus is only a short boat ride away from the southern coast of Sumatra. It’s small enough to explore in a single afternoon, but rich enough in experiences to stay for days.

    Serenity by the Shore

As you step off the boat, it becomes immediately clear—this isn’t a party island or a tourist trap. There are no cars, no loudspeakers, no honking horns. The soundtrack here is entirely natural: crashing waves, rustling palms, the occasional boat engine, and the chirping of tropical birds.

The beach is soft and sloping, the sand a mix of warm beige and coral white. Trees provide natural shade, and in the distance, you might spot local fishermen tending to floating cages where they raise grouper and snapper. The whole atmosphere feels like a return to a simpler time—one without Wi-Fi and deadlines.

    A Snorkeling Heaven for Beginners

    Snorkeling

Tanjung Putus is perfect for snorkeling, even for absolute beginners. You don’t need to venture far from the shore or rent a boat. In fact, one of the best snorkeling spots is just a few fin-kicks from the dock. Simply descend into the water and float. The sea depth ranges from 2 to 5 meters, and visibility is excellent. You’ll be greeted by clouds of butterflyfish, clownfish darting into sea anemones, and small coral bommies pulsing with color.

Locals will gently remind visitors not to wade in from the beach to protect the fragile corals. Instead, they encourage entering the water from the dock or a boat, minimizing reef damage. It’s a small act of conservation that keeps the marine life here thriving.

    Diving into Deeper Beauty

If you’re a licensed diver, Tanjung Putus opens up an entirely different world. Several dive sites around the island offer calm currents and moderate depths—perfect for beginner to intermediate divers.

Some dives hover at just 5–8 meters, offering lazy drifts over vibrant reef systems. Others go deeper, down to 20 meters, where the truly adventurous can explore underwater caves. These formations are carved naturally, and entering them gives a thrill unlike anything else—a quiet, eerie beauty that challenges both nerves and navigation skills.

One of the most exciting dive sites includes shipwrecks, believed to be remnants of fishing boats destroyed in past tsunamis. Over time, these wrecks have transformed into artificial reefs, now home to schooling fish, moray eels, and soft coral gardens.

    A Paradise for Underwater Photographers

Tanjung Putus has quietly earned a reputation among macro photographers as a treasure trove. The reefs around the island host dozens of species of nudibranchs—tiny sea slugs with surreal patterns and vibrant colors. They’re like miniature dragons of the sea, slow-moving and hypnotic to watch through a macro lens.

Whether you’re capturing the swirl of a feather star, the glint of a cleaner shrimp, or the ethereal shape of a pygmy seahorse, there’s no shortage of tiny wonders waiting to be discovered.

    Overnight Bliss

While there are no major resorts on the island, there are a handful of homestays and simple beach cottages run by friendly local families. Rooms are basic but clean, with prices ranging from IDR 100,000 to 350,000 per night (roughly $7 to $25 USD).

One of the more well-known spots offers seafront huts with direct access to the beach. There’s no air-conditioning, but sea breezes do a great job cooling you off. Electricity may be limited to certain hours of the day, but it adds to the charm. Think hammocks, beach bonfires, and grilled seafood under starlight.

Most homestays provide meals—usually rice, grilled fish, vegetables, and sambal (chili paste). Don’t expect five-star menus, but expect food made with care, often caught fresh that same morning.

    Getting There

There are two main routes to reach Tanjung Putus, each with its own perks.

    1. Via Ketapang Pier (The Island-Hopping Route)

This is the most scenic and flexible option. From Bandar Lampung, drive to Ketapang Pier—roughly two hours depending on traffic. From there, you can hire a local boat for a day trip or overnight adventure. The boat journey to Tanjung Putus takes around an hour and often includes stops at other islands like Kelagian, Pahawang, and Lelangga.

Traveling in a group makes this option economical. Boat rental ranges from IDR 600,000 to 800,000 per day, but the cost can be split among 6–10 people. It’s the perfect setup for a group of friends or family.

    2. Overland and Short Boat Ride

If you’re on a tighter budget, this second route is more practical. Drive from Bandar Lampung via Way Ratay road, passing through small fishing towns, shrimp farms, and quiet rural areas. Once you reach the coastal edge, a short boat ride takes you directly to the island.

The overland journey is longer and can be bumpy, but it’s a unique look into daily life in coastal Lampung—shrimp ponds, mangroves, and small warungs (food stalls) along the way.

    A Place for Soulful Travelers

Tanjung Putus is not Bali. It’s not Gili Trawangan. It’s not a place for beach clubs, DJs, or overpriced cocktails. But that’s precisely the point. This is a destination for those seeking raw, sincere nature. For those who can swap high-speed Wi-Fi for a hammock and the scent of sea breeze.

    It’s ideal for:

    • Solo travelers in need of introspection
    • Couples seeking quiet romance
    • Divers and snorkelers hungry for healthy reefs
    • Photographers chasing marine magic
    • Digital detoxers needing to unplug

    Respect the Reef

Tanjung Putus relies on its natural beauty to survive. The local community and guides often educate visitors on how to behave respectfully:

    • Never walk on coral reefs.
    • Don’t collect shells or marine life.
    • Take your trash back with you.
    • Support the locals—stay in their homes, eat their food, hire their boats.
    • Keep noise to a minimum, especially at night.

By being mindful, visitors help preserve what makes Tanjung Putus so special.

    Suggested 3-Day Experience

    Day 1:
Arrive at Ketapang Pier, charter a boat, and stop at a couple of islands before reaching Tanjung Putus. Check into your homestay, enjoy a fresh seafood dinner, and relax by the shore under the stars.

    Day 2:
Wake early and go snorkeling near the dock. After breakfast, head out for a dive or boat trip to the nearby cave site. Spend the afternoon taking photos or simply floating in the sea. Share stories with fellow travelers over dinner.

    Day 3:
Watch the sunrise, savor your last hours in paradise, then begin the return trip—sun-kissed and saltwater-soaked, with a camera full of memories.

    The Final Splash

Tanjung Putus is the kind of place that doesn’t scream for attention—but quietly wins your heart. With its calm seas, colorful reefs, and the whisper of legends in the breeze, it stands apart as one of Indonesia’s hidden marine sanctuaries.

If you’re looking for a destination that’s peaceful yet full of life, off-grid yet accessible, and rich in underwater treasures, then add Tanjung Putus to your journey. Let it surprise you. Let it slow you down. And most importantly, let it remind you what travel is all about.
