Australia Bans Social Media for Children Under 16 Starting December 2025

Australia is set to become the first country in the world to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media. The groundbreaking law, which officially comes into effect in December 2025, raises the minimum age to sign up for social media accounts from 13 to 16.

The legislation, passed in November 2024, comes amid growing concerns about the negative impact of social media on teenagers’ mental health. Studies have shown that excessive screen time and exposure to online platforms can lead to issues such as cyberbullying, misinformation, body image problems, and anxiety disorders.

A Step to Protect Mental Health

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the ban as a “reasonable but overdue” step to safeguard children at a crucial stage in their lives.

“This law will give young Australians three extra years shaped by real-life experiences, not algorithms,” Albanese emphasized.

The government argues that delaying children’s access to social media will help reduce the risks associated with online platforms and give them more time to develop in healthier, offline environments.

    Global Reactions

The move has sparked international debate and gained attention from policymakers around the world. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Australia’s bold step, saying Europe would closely watch and learn from the policy.

“We in Europe are watching and will learn from you. Our duty is to move forward for the next generation,” von der Leyen stated in a speech.

While some countries have been considering stricter age limits for social media use, none have gone as far as Australia in enforcing a nationwide ban.

What This Means for Parents and Tech Companies

The new regulation will put pressure on major social media companies such as Meta (Facebook, Instagram), TikTok, and Snapchat to strengthen their age verification systems. Platforms will be legally required to block underage users and comply with stricter oversight by the Australian government.

For parents, the law provides a legal backing to delay children’s exposure to social media. However, experts note that enforcement will be challenging, as tech-savvy teenagers often find ways around age restrictions.

A Global Shift in Online Safety Policies

Australia’s bold decision reflects a growing global concern about how digital platforms influence younger generations. While critics argue the ban may be difficult to enforce and could limit children’s digital literacy, supporters believe it is a necessary move to protect mental health.

As the December 2025 rollout approaches, the world will be watching closely to see whether Australia’s policy becomes a model for other nations.
