Central Java, Indonesia<\/strong> \u2013 The breathtaking Dieng Plateau, a highland region famed for its volcanic landscape, ancient temples, and unique cultural traditions, has officially been recognized as a National Geopark<\/strong> by Indonesia\u2019s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The designation was formalized through Ministerial Decree No. 172.K\/GL.01\/MEM.G\/2025<\/strong>, issued on May 7, 2025. Located across Wonosobo and Banjarnegara regencies in Central Java<\/strong>, Dieng has long been a popular tourist destination, often called the \u201cLand Above the Clouds\u201d for its cool climate and scenic beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Milestone for Tourism, Research, and Conservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Central Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin Maimoen<\/strong> welcomed the decision, describing it as a significant step not only for tourism but also for science and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe designation of Dieng as a geopark is not only about natural and tourism potential but also about its role as a hub for education and research. The goal is for us to protect Dieng together,\u201d he said, as quoted by Antara<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He also emphasized that with its new status, Dieng will attract both domestic and international researchers. Their findings are expected to contribute to sustainable conservation strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rich Heritage and Natural Wonders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dieng Plateau is home to a remarkable blend of geological wonders and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore 8th-century Hindu temples<\/strong>, experience the ritual of cutting dreadlocks in children<\/strong>, and witness geothermal phenomena such as crater lakes, bubbling hot springs, and sulfur pits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese diverse potentials\u2014from cultural traditions to natural landscapes\u2014should be developed in a way that also improves the welfare of local communities,\u201d Taj Yasin added. He encouraged Wonosobo and Banjarnegara governments to collaborate in maximizing the region\u2019s potential while ensuring regulations are followed so that local development remains sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toward Global Recognition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From the perspective of the central government, the designation serves as a foundation for better and more professional management of Dieng\u2019s natural assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhammad Wafid<\/strong>, Head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of ESDM, noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe designation of a geopark by the ministry is an initial capital to build better, professional, and sustainable management. Going forward, I hope the Dieng Plateau can also be recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG)<\/strong>. To achieve this, proper management of the area is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
