Centuries ago, life in Batavia \u2014 now Jakarta \u2014 was shadowed not only by colonial pressure but also by the terror of tigers. Historical records reveal that the Javan tiger, once native to the island of Java, frequently attacked humans, forcing the colonial government to deploy hundreds of hunters in an effort to eliminate the threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to historian Peter Boomgaard in Frontiers of Fear<\/em> (2001), between 1633 and 1687 there were at least 30 recorded cases of tiger attacks on Batavia residents. Most of these incidents occurred in sugarcane plantations, which at the time provided the perfect habitat for tigers. The tall, dense cane offered shelter, while the abundance of wild boars made for easy prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn one incident in 1659, 14 people were reported killed by tigers in the Ancol area,\u201d Boomgaard wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The terror did not affect only the local population. In 1668, the first European victim, Louis van Brussel, was mauled to death by a tiger. The growing danger pushed the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to take drastic action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Historian Hendrik E. Niemeijer in Batavia, Seventeenth-Century Colonial Society<\/em> (2012) noted that in 1644, the VOC mobilized about 800 hunters to chase down tigers in Batavia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The carcasses of slain tigers were publicly displayed in front of Batavia\u2019s City Hall \u2014 the same building that still stands today in Jakarta\u2019s Old Town (Kota Tua). This spectacle was both a warning and reassurance to residents that the threat was being dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To further encourage tiger hunting, the VOC offered cash rewards. Boomgaard recorded that the bounty was around 10 ringgit per tiger, enough to feed a family with rice for a year. This reward system led to independent hunting by locals, accelerating the decline of the Javan tiger population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As forests were cleared for plantations, the habitat of the Javan tiger shrank dramatically. This made human-tiger encounters more frequent and often deadly. Anthropologist R. Wessing, in his study The Last Tiger in East Java<\/em> (1995), estimated that during the colonial era, tiger attacks killed an average of 2,500 people annually across Java.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Over time, the relentless hunting and habitat loss pushed the Javan tiger toward extinction. By 1940, their population had dwindled to an estimated 200\u2013300 individuals. Eventually, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially declared the Javan tiger extinct in its Red List in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet, stories of possible sightings persist. In 2019, residents of Cipendeuy village in South Sukabumi claimed to have seen a Javan tiger, reporting paw prints, claw marks, and even a strand of fur. However, without concrete evidence, these accounts remain in the realm of mystery and folklore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The story of tiger terror in Batavia reflects more than just human-wildlife conflict; it is also a story about ecological change, colonial intervention, and the irreversible consequences of mass hunting.
